Six national teams to compete in Haarlem this summer
The 2024 edition promises to be particularly exciting! Six top teams will come to Haarlem to compete for the coveted prize. Between July 12 and 19, top-level baseball will once again be played at the Pim Mulier Stadium. The national teams of the USA, Italy, Chinese Taipei, Japan, Spain, and the Kingdom of the Netherlands will be in action. Read more about the participants below!
Spain
Although the Southern Europeans are traveling to Haarlem for the first time, thanks to their fifteen bronze medals at the European Championships, it is fair to say that they have been thebest of the restbehind the Netherlands and Italy since time immemorial.
In recent years, national coach Nelson Prada's team seems increasingly capable of breaking the double hegemony. Last summer's European title proves that the Spaniards can now even compete well with their eternal rivals.
The Spanish also owe this success to a large contingent of South and Central American players. The majority of the team consists of Venezuelans and Dominicans, supplemented by a handful of Cubans.
So expect Spain to play power baseball, both from the mound and at the plate, and if luck is on their side, this team could well end up winning their first Baseball Week edition.
Chinese Taipei
The Chinese Taipei national baseball team has a rich history in international baseball and has participated in several major tournaments, including the World Baseball Classic, the Olympic Games, and the Baseball World Cup. The team has also participated in the Baseball Week several times.
The baseball team is known for its strong pitching and fast play. They have achieved several successes in the past, including medals at the Olympic Games and other international tournaments.
In general, the Chinese Taipei national baseball team is considered one of the strongest teams in Asia and a serious contender in international baseball competitions.
Italy
Italy is one of the best baseball countries in Europe and a welcome guest at Baseball Week.
The Italian national baseball team often features a mix of players, including some Italian players who were born and raised in the United States, and others who have developed their careers primarily in Italy. This gives the team an interesting dynamic and a unique blend of baseball talent. Overall, the Italian baseball team has proven that it is capable of competing against the best teams in the world.
Italy is a real crowd favorite in Haarlem. The games between Italy and the Netherlands are legendary. The Italian professional league even shuts down for a week for Baseball Week. The national team is coached by Hall of Famer and former MLB player Mike Piazza.
USA
Two years ago, we were treated to a rock-solid American selection in Haarlem. The standouts of that group were pitcher Paul Skenes and fielders Dylan Crews and Wyatt Langford. Like their teammates Jacob Wilson and Rhett Lowder, they disappeared from the draft board very early on during the 2023 MLB Draft. Langford has since made his debut with reigning champions the Texas Rangers. Less than two years after his performance at Baseball Week, he is already considered good enough for the highest level.
This year, Team USA is sending the National Junior College Team. Junior college is often an intermediate step toward a university team for young players who have just graduated from high school. The American selection will therefore be slightly younger this year than in 2022.
The last time a junior college delegation participated in Baseball Week was in 2010. Anthony Bemboom, who was part of that selection, eventually made it to the Major League; he played for the Rays, Angels, and Orioles between 2019 and 2023. He is currently in the Minor League with the Detroit Tigers.
Although the American team will be somewhat younger in 2024 than during the last edition of Baseball Week, we can still expect a talented Team USA. They may not be the stars of tomorrow, but they could well be the stars of the day after tomorrow.
Japan
Samurai Japan, also known as the Japanese national baseball team, is one of the most prestigious teams in international baseball. The team is renowned for its dedication, skill, and unmatched passion for the game. Since its inception, Samurai Japan has built a rich legacy of success on the field, making it a true powerhouse in international competitions.
Samurai Japan has achieved an impressive string of victories in various international tournaments, including the World Baseball Classic and the Olympic Games. These triumphs have earned them a special place in the hearts of baseball fans around the world and have helped to promote the popularity of the sport of baseball.
With a strong focus on discipline, training, and technical skills, Samurai Japan remains an example of excellence in the world of baseball. Team Japan has won Baseball Week three times and is bringing a strong and talented team to Haarlem again this year!
Kingdom of the Netherlands
Team Kingdom of the Netherlands, the national baseball team of the Netherlands, is a notable force in the world of international baseball. The team represents not only the Netherlands, but also the Caribbean parts of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, including Aruba, Curaçao, and Sint Maarten, giving it a diverse and dynamic composition.
Team Kingdom of the Netherlands is historically one of the best countries in Europe, with multiple European titles, a world title (2011), and five titles at the Honkbalweek. The team has also performed well at the Olympic Games and the World Baseball Classic.
