HAARLEM, 19 SEPTEMBER 2023 – The organization of Baseball Week Haarlem has appointed Peter Herkemij as tournament director. He succeeds the recently departed Léon Ravestein, who held the role from 2017. Herkemij has already been installed by the board and will begin his duties within Baseball Week Haarlem effective immediately.
Herkemij is excited about his new role with Baseball Week. “The challenge of my full commitment to the Haarlem Baseball Week is in the tradition and prestige of the tournament, and to promote baseball in general. Our sport is beautiful, fair and always challenging. You can never think you’ve seen it all.
Hopefully my contribution can lead to showing passion and enthusiasm for this beautiful sport to a large audience at a high level!
Outgoing tournament director Léon Ravestein is pleased with Herkemij’s appointment. “I am very happy that someone with Peter’s qualities and knowledge of baseball wants to take over the tournament directorship from me.”
Peter Herkemij (b. 1968) lives in Haarlem. After completing a degree in Business Economics and two years in military service, he began a career with the Amsterdam shipping company Spliethoff, where he has now been employed for 30 years.
Thanks to a baseball past with ABC, Amsterdam Pirates, Hoofddorp Pioniers, Kinheim and the Baseball Academy Kennemerland Rabbits, the baseball world is not unfamiliar to Herkemij. He has also served as manager of the Dutch U12 baseball team since 2017. Herkemij was already involved in Baseball Week as a volunteer in the 1980s and, after some absence, now returns to the organization with his new role on the board.
