Haarlem, June 23, 2024 – In a unique video recording, Jos Wienen, mayor of Haarlem, welcomed participants and fans to Haarlem for Baseball Week 2024. The mayor, who himself will have the honor of throwing the first ball at the event on July 12, witnessed a special musical moment. City carillonneur Rien Donkersloot played the well-known baseball song “Take Me Out to the Ballgame” on the bells of St. Mary’s Church. Bavo Church in the Grote Markt. This musical announcement marks the beginning of the festivities surrounding Baseball Week Haarlem 2024. The song will be heard around town during Baseball Week.
Haarlem, baseball capital of Europe
Haarlem has a special connection to the sport of baseball: the city is home to numerous baseball clubs and has a rich history of baseball traditions. After winning the world championship, the Dutch national team was honored in Haarlem, and many talented players started their careers in this city, or played here. Europe’s biggest baseball event, Baseball Week, takes place in Haarlem and attracts thousands of visitors from all over the world every year.
Since 1961, Baseball Week has held a special place in the hearts of the people of Haarlem. This year’s event will take place from July 12 to 19, and promises to be another week of sportsmanship, fun and connection. The event was named the city’s “intangible heritage” several years back. The organization looks forward to welcoming everyone and enjoying high quality baseball games and festivities together. Tens of thousands of visitors are expected at Pim Mulier Stadium again this year.
